After more than 30 years in the telecommunication industry, I’ve worked with many different types of service providers around the world that have successfully deployed a multitude of FTTH architectures and technologies. As you consider which fiber architecture and technology is right for your network, keep these three critical factors in mind:
1. Build a network based on industry standards
Industry standards are created to help service providers leverage the power of scale and the associated cost efficiencies, while also providing peace of mind that your network will be supported long into the future. Standards also help manufacturers focus their investments to accelerate and drive technology advancements forward. Building a network that is based on industry standards such as 1:32 split ratios gives you the right foundation for the future of your network.
2. Choose the OSP architecture that best fits your needs and your budget
When building a network, one rule of thumb is that approximately 80 percent of your project cost will be OSP construction. This makes choosing the right architecture a critical factor when building a business case for your network.
While not absolute, urban areas tend to benefit more from a Centralized Split architecture where you have high population density and shorter fiber runs to reach customers. A Distributed Split architecture tends to have some cost advantages in suburban areas when fiber runs become longer and population density starts to drop.
In rural communities, consider a Distributed Tap architecture. Distributed Tap has unique attributes that enables service providers to build networks into single-digit population densities (homes/mile) while still leveraging the benefits of standards-based technology.
3. Leverage the experience and best practices of others
Discover what has worked – or not – for others and apply these learnings, best practices and approaches to your network build.
