The power of standards

“If you want to go fast, go alone. But if you want to go far, go together.”

—African Proverb

Imagine working from home and trying to plug your laptop into an outlet, only to find that the plug doesn’t fit the receptacle. After work, you jump into your car, but half of the vehicles are driving on the opposite side of the road, everyone is traveling at different speeds, and no one knows what to do when a traffic light turns red.

Various industry standards—which result from companies collaborating and defining a set of characteristics that describe the requirements of a product, process, or service—ensure that these things don't happen.

Standards don't just make it easier for us to charge our laptops and drive safely in our car to the grocery store; they also yield significant benefits in the areas of broadband, including:

  • Increased competition, thanks to a thriving ecosystem
  • Rapid innovation, that results in technology and product advances
  • Highly differentiated new products and services that will excite your subscribers

Holding the future to a higher standard

Going back to the early days of voice communication services, the goal was to provide 99.999 percent (aka “five-nines”) reliability. Standards also required backward compatibility, which is why many telephones from the 1950s still work in some of the networks that still exist today.

Fast forward to 2021 and standards are more critical than ever; especially in the area of broadband access, as Internet (and Wi-Fi) connectivity have become as important a utility as heat, hydro, and water.

The future of broadband depends on a collective, collaborative approach that goes beyond delivering high-quality point solutions. By combining the flexibility and speed of open source with the efficiencies of interoperability and open standards, the market possibilities become endless. The result? A world of opportunity for service providers to offer new products and services that will excite subscribers, create differentiation, and generate additional revenue.

“Now is the time for the fixed broadband industry to embrace standards, such as Wi-Fi Data Elements™, Wi-Fi EasyMesh™, and even TR-369…”

Calix Receives Unique Wi-Fi Certification from Broadband Forum

Service providers looking for an independent, unbiased certification of Wi-Fi systems need look no further.

Designed to help BSPs save costs, while improving the customer experience, the Broadband Forum recently unveiled its ‘BBF.398 Grade Wi-Fi Program’; and Calix is one of the first two vendors to receive this certification.

According to the Broadband Forum’s recent press release, “Operators around the world continue to use TR-398 as the Wi-Fi performance admission specification for broadband customer premises equipment (CPE) products into their networks. It is vitally important that test labs, vendors and service providers continue to come together to meet subscriber Wi-Fi demands and elevate the overall customer experience.”

A recent report published by the Broadband Forum and Omdia, ‘The Future Telco—Connected Home 2021 Survey report’, highlighted that customer dissatisfaction around the Wi-Fi experience is becoming a growing driver of customer churn. The report found that more than 30% of support calls were related to poor Wi-Fi performance.

A full list of all certified devices can be found on the Broadband Forum website.
