The concept of Open Access Networks has been around for many years. A single network operator builds out the fiber infrastructure and multiple providers deliver a variety of services to businesses and residential customers. The Calix E7 platform is well designed for Open Access networks, both GPON and Pt-to-Pt GE. The E7 enables any service, including IPTV, to be offered by multiple service providers.
Open Access networks are still relatively rare in the United States and Canada, but Danville, Virginia is one of several successful Calix Open Access networks here in the U.S. Open Access networks are increasingly common in other parts of the world, particularly in Europe and Asia/Pacific. Calix is proud to be involved in some of the most successful Open Access networks in the world, such as the Covage network in France and the NorthPower network in New Zealand.
Open Access networks in the United States have struggled. Rollouts have been more successful overseas where the Open Access model is required by regulators. Networks in the U.S. have suffered from several challenges. The first is the ability to attract service providers to the network. One successful approach to overcoming this problem is to partner with a specific service provider for the initial rollout and then open the network up over time. This approach was used successfully by Danville, Virginia and Powell, Wyoming. By working with a motivated single service provider at the beginning the consumers are able to get the service and customer support they need, but over time they also get the benefit of added choice.
A second problem facing Open Access networks is the high variability in service quality and customer support between different service providers. If a consumer has a bad experience with a service provider they tend to blame the network operator and rather than shifting to another service provider on the network, they may opt to shift to another network all together. Calix has a developed a unique solution for Open Access networks using the GigaCenter and Compass software suite that enables the network operator to ensure a high quality user experience irrespective of which service provider the customer selects.
GigaCenters have always been about improving the overall User Experience. Working with Calix’ Open Access customers a better User Experience is now coming to Open Access networks. The Open Access network operator deploys the Calix GigaCenter and manages the ONT portion of the GigaCenter using CMS.
Service Providers on the Open Access Network then utilize Consumer Connect to provision all of their services-voice, internet, IPTV- on the GigaCenter using TR-69. The service provider is assured of being able to offer a high quality User Experience and is saved the cost of providing an additional residential gateway and the requisite truck roll. The network operator benefits from having an easily provisioned solution and consistent performance between service providers. Everyone is happy. Everyone is saving time, money and energy.
